Is "Big Oil" Really That Big?

May 24, 2008

Big Oil has been getting some heavy heat recently from politicians, environmentalists, among others, as U.S. businesses like ExxonMobil and Chevron are blamed for the high gas prices facing the country today. While blaming "Big Oil" certainly is the popular view, many people don't realize the state of other foreign oil businesses around the globe. This article sheds some interesting light on the industry and the current situation that U.S. oil companies face today. It may be a lot different than you think. Just take a look at this graph that is included in the article:

Is Big Oil really as evil as politicians and the media would lead you to believe? Environmental regulations, good or bad, have made it impossible for the U.S. to rely on oil drilled in our country and instead we rely on oil controlled by foreign governments whom are not exactly friendly toward the U.S. Now we soon could be suing OPEC, Iran, and Venezuela all because we aren't willing to drill for oil on our own soil. Can the level of ignorance go much higher? We'll find out soon enough.
